19.07.2023
– Kamila Skolimowska Memorial Meet is one of the best sports events promoting Poland. The meeting is held as part of the Diamond League. This year’s edition took place last Sunday in Chorzów and was organized to the highest standards. I would like to thank the Polish athletes for the great sporting emotions and to congratulate the hosts, said minister of Sport and Tourism Kamil Bortniczuk during a press briefing at the ministry headquarters.
The event, which closed the Sunday memorial meeting, was attended by Natalia Kaczmarek who won the 400-metre run with a personal record time of 49.48, which was also the meeting’s record and the second best result in the history of Polish athletics. Our top athlete was accompanied by Kamila Skolimowska Memorial Sports Director Piotr Małachowski and Secretary General of the Polish Athletics Association Krzysztof Kęcki.
Kamila Skolimowska Memorial shows our beautiful sports facilities and the great time spectators are having but, first of all, presents our athletes who achieve top-level results at world level. A year ago, during the Memorial’s debut in the Diamond League, we demonstrated our ability to organize world-class events at our facilities. This year, we prepared even better for this. As the Ministry of Sports and Tourism we allocated PLN 5.5 million for this year’s meeting so as to make it a pattern to follow. Our support for the Memorial will continue,
– emphasized minister Kamil Bortniczuk.
25,000 fans watched the competitions at the Silesian Stadium, creating a great atmosphere and cheering on the Polish athletes. The wite-and-reds achieved several excellent results. Natalia Kaczmarek, as already mentioned, won the 400 m run. Wojciech Nowicki won the hammer throw competition. Ewa Swoboda broke her personal record in the 100 m run with the time of 10.94 that is 0.01 seconds less the Polish record. During the Kamila Skolimowska Memorial the three athletes and Pia Skrzyszowska achieved results required to qualify for next year’s Olympic Games in Paris.
The Diamond League meeting will be held in Chorzów for at least three more years. Ahead of us are the next editions of the prestigious athletics series that annually includes 14 best athletics events of the world. It will be an excellent opportunity to promote athletics among fans, media and sponsors, and to encourage people to practice physical activity in order to improve their health and well-being.
