We already have 500 homes and Senior+ clubs

11.01.2019

A record growth in the number of day homes and Senior+ clubs, a huge programme budget and an even stronger focus on the needs of senior citizens from rural areas - it was a crucial year for the senior citizen policy. In 2019, the budget of the Senior+ Programme was 80 million PLN!

500

Senior homes and clubs constitute social activity centres.  Senior citizens may attend cooking workshops and sport activities, but they can also pursue their passions.
“Local governments, aware of the demographic situation in their societies, provide senior citizens with means and facilities to spend their time and pursue their passions”, said Elżbieta Rafalska, the Minister of Family, Labour and Social Policy during the opening ceremony of the Day Home “Senior+” in Sulęcin. By the end of 2018, the total of 226 day homes and 274 clubs were founded under the Senior+ programme. In Poland, there are more than 500 such centres.

More and more senior citizens centres appear on the map of regions

The most meeting places for senior citizens exist in Mazowieckie region - 69 centres (25 homes and 44 clubs), and in Małopolskie region - 54 centres 17 and 37, respectively), and in Śląskie- 44 (25 and 19, respectively). In four other regions, there are more than 30 homes and clubs each: in Wielkopolskie - 39, Podkarpackie - 34, Dolnośląskie - 30 and Pomerania - 30. There are fewer homes and clubs in other regions: Świętokrzyskie – 29, Warmińsko-Mazurskie - 28, Zachodniopomorskie - 26, Kujawsko-Pomorskie - 22 and Lubelskie – 22.
The Senior + map also covers Lubelskie and  Łódzkie regions –  22 centres each, Podlaskie – 18, Opolskie – 14.

In 2018 only, 260 homes and clubs were founded

This is very good news, especially considering the fact that in 2015, there were fewer than 100 such centres across Poland, accommodating 2,800 senior citizens. At that time, the budget of the Senior+ home and club programme was 30 million PLN. In 2018, the record amount of 80 million PLN was allocated to launch and run such centres.
The programme made it possible to start 67 Senior+ day homes and 193 Senior+ clubs only in the year 2018. The total number of such centres in Poland was 260. The most centres opened in Mazowieckie region - 45 (8 homes and 37 clubs), Małopolskie - 34 (5 and 29, respectively) and Śląskie - 21 (6 and 15, respectively).

Providing for the needs of senior citizens in rural areas
Importantly, in 2017, nearly half - 47.8% of the Senior+ centres opened in towns with fewer than 3,000 inhabitants. They were founded mainly in small towns, which until recently were the most hard to reach with proposals for the elderly. This was possible thanks to expanding the programme formula beginning with 2017. The most important changes involved, among other things, introducing Senior+ clubs, which are simplified forms of Senior+ centres, with fewer requirements concerning the standard of premises and personnel.

The senior citizen policy will be continued in the same form in 2019. The programme budget is 80 million PLN.
